Monthly Spot-On Parasite Protection for Medium Dogs

Product Description

Midamox (Imidacloprid + Moxidectin) Topical Solution for Dogs 20.1–55 lbs is an FDA-approved prescription monthly spot-on treatment bioequivalent to Advantage Multi, designed for medium-sized dogs. Each red-box applicator contains imidacloprid 10% and moxidectin 2.5%, delivering the minimum required doses of 10mg/kg imidacloprid and 2.5mg/kg moxidectin based on body weight. Put on the skin between the shoulder blades once a month, the solution absorbs systemically and works on fleas and sarcoptic mange externally while going after heartworm larvae, microfilariae, hookworms, and roundworms internally. The water-resistant formula holds up after bathing or swimming on a consistent monthly schedule.

Benefits

  • Heartworm Disease Prevention: Stops heartworm disease from Dirofilaria immitis larvae from taking hold when applied consistently every 30 days in medium-sized dogs.
  • Circulating Microfilariae Treatment: The only FDA-approved generic combination shown to work against circulating heartworm microfilariae in dogs already testing positive.
  • Complete Flea Life Cycle Disruption: Takes out adult fleas fast and cuts into immature flea development to bring active infestations under control in the home.
  • Sarcoptic Mange Control: Goes after sarcoptic mange infestations and brings relief from the intense itching and skin damage this highly contagious mite causes.
  • Multi-Parasite Single Dose: One monthly application covers fleas, heartworm, sarcoptic mange, hookworms, and roundworms for comprehensive year-round parasite control.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • For Dogs Only: The moxidectin level in this dog formulation is far above what cats can handle safely, and applying it to a cat can be fatal.
  • Do Not Apply Orally: This product is for external topical use only and should never be swallowed or put near the mouth.
  • Prevent Licking After Application: Treated dogs should be kept away from other pets for 30 minutes and watched to make sure they do not lick the application spot before it dries.
  • Avoid Bathing for 24 Hours: Bathing, shampooing, or swimming should be avoided for at least 24 hours after each monthly application to allow full absorption.
  • Caution in MDR1-Affected Breeds: Collies, Australian Shepherds, and other MDR1-affected breeds may show greater sensitivity to moxidectin and need careful management on this product.
  • Not for Puppies Under 7 Weeks: Puppies under seven weeks old or weighing less than three pounds should not receive this product regardless of weight category.
  • Human Skin and Eye Hazard: Hands should be washed thoroughly after application, and eyes should be flushed with water right away if any accidental contact happens.

Possible Side Effects

  • Application Site Reactions: The treated area may look greasy, show white residue, feel damp and stiff, or show mild redness, with most of this clearing up within 48 hours.
  • Digestive Disturbances: Dogs carrying a heavier parasite load going into treatment are most likely to experience vomiting, loose or bloody stools, and reduced appetite.
  • Respiratory and Ocular Signs: Coughing, nasal discharge, and eye discharge can come up, most often in heartworm-positive dogs during microfilariae clearance.
  • Serious Neurological Reactions: Tremors, loss of coordination, or seizures are rare but serious and call for immediate emergency veterinary care if they appear.

Storage Information

  • Store Below 77°F: Keep applicators at or below 77°F, with brief periods up to 104°F acceptable.
  • Keep in Original Packaging: Applicators should stay in their sealed blister packs until the time of monthly application to protect them from heat, light, and moisture.
  • Out of Reach: Keep this product somewhere children and untreated animals in the home cannot get to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Which medium dog breeds commonly use the Midamox 20.1–55 lbs red box?

Ans: Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs, Border Collies, Basset Hounds, and Whippets are among the medium-sized breeds that typically land in this weight range. Body weight is what determines the right applicator size, not breed, so confirming the dog's current weight with a veterinarian before selecting the box is the right move to avoid under-dosing or overdosing.

Q2: How does Midamox prevent heartworm disease in dogs?

Ans: Moxidectin targets the early larval stages of Dirofilaria immitis before they get the chance to mature into adult worms in the heart and pulmonary arteries. Applying it every 30 days keeps enough moxidectin circulating to wipe out any larvae the dog picked up since the previous dose before they can progress further.

Q3: Should a dog be tested for heartworm before starting Midamox?

Ans: Testing before starting is important because putting a heartworm-positive dog on a preventive without treating the adult worms leaves the infection intact and lets the damage to the heart continue. A veterinarian will go through the options and recommend the right next steps if the dog comes back positive before Midamox begins.

Q4: How is the Midamox red box applicator correctly applied to a medium dog?

Ans: Take one applicator out of the blister pack, hold it upright, and twist or snap the cap off as the packaging directs. Part the hair between the shoulder blades to get to the skin, then press the tip down and empty the full contents into a single spot. Rubbing it in or splitting it across multiple spots is not the right approach.

Q5: Can Midamox 20.1–55 lbs be used year-round in all geographic regions?

Ans: Most veterinarians lean toward year-round monthly use because heartworm transmission now reaches more regions than it once did and gaps in coverage are easy to create with seasonal approaches. Consistent monthly protection matters most where mosquito activity never fully stops, and a veterinarian will advise on the right schedule for the local parasite situation.
