Allopurinol is a drug used to prevent the recurrence of uric acid and kidney stones in dogs. Veterinarians prescribe this for the treatment of leishmaniasis in dogs and cats and to treat gout in certain birds and reptiles. Allopurinol is also used to prevent increased uric acid levels in pets receiving cancer-related chemotherapy. Allopurinol works by reducing the amount of uric acid made by the body, which can cause gout and kidney problems.
