FAQs -  Trifexis Flea Medicine for Dogs

1. Do I have to give Trifexis with food?

Administer Trifexis with food for maximum effectiveness. Trifexis is a chewable beef-flavored tablet that can be given as a treat.

2. Does seeing fleas on my dog mean the treatment is not working?

Trifexis kills fleas on dogs before they can lay eggs when used monthly and according to the label directions. Remember that all animals in the household should be treated with an approved flea product to help control the flea population. Your dog can continue to be exposed to fleas that live in the environment. When fleas jump onto and bite your dog, they will be killed by Trifexis. If, within a month after your dog receives Trifexis, you see fleas on your dog, they are most likely new fleas. These new fleas will be killed before they can produce eggs that contaminate the environment. Continued monthly use of Trifexis can protect against any new infestations.

3. What if I see worms in my dog’s stool during the month after administration of Trifexis?

Trifexis is indicated to treat and control intestinal parasite infections of adult hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms in dogs. In occasional cases, you might see intestinal worms being expelled in your dog’s stool — this means Trifexis is working. If you have questions, consult your veterinarian for measures you can take to prevent reinfection of intestinal parasites.

4. If spinosad kills fleas, is it safe for my dog?

Trifexis has been demonstrated to be safe in healthy dogs when used according to label directions. Spinosad, one of its active ingredients, is produced by a bacterium first isolated from natural sources (a soil sample collected in the Caribbean).

Spinosad selectively targets the nervous system of the flea (and other insects) due to differences in the targeted receptors compared to mammalian nervous systems.
However, as with all medications, sensitivities in individual animals can occur, sometimes resulting in side effects. See the Trifexis label for complete safety information.

5. Can Trifexis be given to cats?

No, Trifexis is not approved for use in cats. Trifexis was developed exclusively for administration to dogs.

 6. Can Trifexis be used for dogs under 40 lbs?

Trifexis is formulated specifically for dogs weighing 40.1-60 lbs. For dogs under 40 lbs, a different dosage is required. Consult your veterinarian for the appropriate Trifexis product for smaller dogs to ensure safety and effectiveness.

7. How should I handle Trifexis if my dog has a food allergy?

If your dog has food allergies, consult your veterinarian before administering Trifexis.

8. What steps should I take if I accidentally miss a Trifexis dose?

If you miss a dose of Trifexis, administer it as soon as you remember. Resume the regular monthly schedule afterward. Consistency is key for effective protection against parasites, so avoid missing doses whenever possible. To avoid missing doses, consider subscribing to automatic medication delivery.
