Dosage and Administration:

Always provide the Client Information Sheet with a prescription. Carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of Firovet and other treatment options before deciding to use Firovet. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual response. The recommended dosage of Firovet (firocoxib) for oral administration in dogs is 2.27 mg/lb (5.0 mg/kg) body weight once daily as needed for osteoarthritis and for 3 days as needed for postoperative pain and inflammation associated with soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery. The dogs can be treated with Firovet approximately two hours before surgery. The tablets are scored and dosage should be calculated in half tablet increments. Firovet chewable tablets can be administered with or without food.

Contraindications:

Dogs with known hypersensitivity to firocoxib should not receive Firovet.

Warnings:

Not for use in humans. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental ingestion by humans.

For oral use in dogs only. Use of this product at doses above the recommended 2.27mg/lb (5.0mg/kg)in puppies less than seven months of age has been associated with serious adverse reactions, including death (see Animal Safety). Due to tablet sizes and scoring, dogs weighing less than 12.5lb (5.7kg) cannot be accurately dosed. All dogs should undergo a thorough history and physical examination before the initiation of NSAID therapy. Appropriate laboratory testing to establish hematological and serum baseline data is recommended before and periodically during the administration of any NSAID.

Owners should be advised to observe for signs of potential drug toxicity (see Adverse Reactions and Animal Safety) and be given a Client Information Sheet about Firovet chewable Tablets.

To report suspected adverse drug events, for technical assistance or to obtain a copy of the SafetyData Sheet, contact Dechra at 1-866-933-2472. For additional information about adverse drug experience reporting for animal drugs, contact the FDA at 1-888-FDA-VETS or http://www.fda.gov/reportanimalae Keep Firovet in a secure location out of reach of dogs, cats, and other animals to prevent accidental ingestion or overdose

Precautions:

This product cannot be accurately dosed in dogs less than 12.5 pounds in body weight.

Consider appropriate washout times when switching from one NSAID to another or when switching from corticosteroid use to NSAID use.

As a class, cyclooxygenase-inhibitory NSAIDs may be associated with renal, gastrointestinal, and hepatic toxicity. Sensitivity to drug-associated adverse events varies with the individual patient. Dogs that have experienced adverse reactions from one NSAID may experience adverse reactions from another NSAID. Patients at greatest risk for adverse events are those who are dehydrated, on concomitant diuretic therapy, or those with existing renal, cardiovascular, and/or hepatic dysfunction. Concurrent administration of potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be carefully approached and monitored. NSAIDs may inhibit the prostaglandins that maintain normal homeostatic function. Such anti-prostaglandin effects may result in clinically significant disease in patients with underlying or pre-existing disease that has not been previously diagnosed. Since NSAIDs possess the potential to produce gastrointestinal ulceration and/or gastrointestinal perforation, concomitant use of Firovet chewable tablets with other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as NSAIDs or corticosteroids, should be avoided. The concomitant use of protein-bound drugs with Firovet chewable tablets has not been studied in dogs. Commonly used protein-bound drugs include cardiac, anticonvulsant, and behavioral medications.

The influence of concomitant drugs that may inhibit the metabolism of Firovet chewable tablets has not been evaluated. Drug compatibility should be monitored in patients requiring adjunctive therapy.

If additional pain medication is needed after the daily dose of Firovet, a non-NSAID class of analgesic may be necessary.

Appropriate monitoring procedures should be employed during all surgical procedures. Anesthetic drugs may affect renal perfusion, so approach concomitant use of anesthetics and NSAIDs cautiously.

The use of parenteral fluids during surgery should be considered to decrease potential renal complications when using NSAIDs perioperatively. The safe use of Firovet chewable tablets in pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs has not been evaluated.

FAQ

What is Firovet?

Firovet is an NSAID prescribed by veterinarians to manage pain and reduce inflammation caused by osteoarthritis, soft tissue issues, or orthopedic surgery in canines.

Osteoarthritis in your dog can cause pain due to the deterioration of cartilage and other joint components, leading to various signs or changes.

  • Difficulty walking or having trouble moving normally.
  • Reduced movement or physical exertion (unwillingness to get up, ascend stairs, leap or sprint, or struggle in completing these tasks).
  • Lack of flexibility or limited mobility in joints.

Firovet is used to manage postoperative pain and inflammation after soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries such as spays and cruciate ligament repair. Your vet might give Firovet before the surgery and suggest continuing treatment for a few days once your dog is back home.

What outcomes should I anticipate when my dog is taking Firovet for osteoarthritis?

Although Firovet cannot cure osteoarthritis, it can manage pain and inflammation and enhance your dog's mobility.

  • Different dogs will have different reactions, but the progress can be very impressive.
  • Improvement in most dogs can be observed in a matter of days.
  • If Firovet is stopped or not administered properly, your dog may experience a recurrence of pain and inflammation.

What results should I anticipate when my dog takes Firovet to manage pain and inflammation after soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries?

  • Firovet chewable tablets help manage pain and inflammation after soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery, promoting a more comfortable recovery for your dog.
  • The management of pain and inflammation can differ from one dog to another.
  • Failure to administer Firovet chewable tablets as instructed by your veterinarian could result in the recurrence of your dog's pain.
  • Seek advice from your vet if your dog seems to be in distress.

What dogs should avoid taking Firovet?

If your dog meets any of the following criteria, do not administer Firovet to him/her:

  • Develops an allergy to firocoxib, the main component in Firovet.
  • Has experienced an allergic response (like hives, facial puffiness, or red or irritated skin) to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Currently using aspirin, other NSAIDs, or corticosteroids.
  • Weigh less than 12.5 pounds.
  • Suffers from existing kidney or liver conditions.
  • Experiencing loss of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Firovet is exclusively for dogs.

Taking Firovet is not recommended for people. Ensure that Firovet and all medications are inaccessible to children. Immediately contact your doctor if you unintentionally consume Firovet.

Instructions on how to administer Firovet to your dog.

Administer Firovet as directed by your vet. Before altering the method of administering Firovet to your dog, consult your veterinarian.

Your vet will inform you about the appropriate dosage of Firovet for your dog and the duration of treatment. Firovet chewable tablets can be given to your dog either by hand or by placing the tablet directly into their mouth. Firovet can be taken with or without food.

Is it safe to administer Firovet along with other medications?

Firovet should not be administered alongside other NSAIDs (like aspirin, carprofen, etodolac, deracoxib, meloxicam, or tepoxalin) or corticosteroids (such as prednisone, cortisone, dexamethasone, or triamcinolone).

Inform your veterinarian of all past and future medications administered to your dog, including any medications intended to be given with Firovet tablets. This should encompass additional medications available over the counter or any nutritional supplements.

Your vet may need to verify if all the medications for your dog can be administered concurrently.

What should I do if my dog consumes more Firovet than recommended?

If your dog consumes more than the recommended dose of Firovet, contact your vet right away.
