Monthly Topical 6-in-1 Parasite Protection for Small Dogs (9.1–20 lbs)

Product Description

Advantage Multi Topical Solution (Teal) is a prescription, once-monthly spot-on treatment for dogs and puppies weighing between 9.1 and 20 pounds. Each tube pairs Imidacloprid (10%) with Moxidectin (2.5%) to take on six different parasites in just one application a month. It covers heartworm prevention, adult flea control, sarcoptic mange, and intestinal worm treatment together. Works for puppies that are at least 7 weeks old and weigh 3 pounds or more.

Benefits

  • Heartworm Disease Prevention: Moxidectin is absorbed into the body and steadily works against heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) throughout the entire month.
  • Treats Circulating Microfilariae: One of the few products indicated to lower circulating Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae counts in dogs already carrying a heartworm infection.
  • Kills Adult Fleas: Imidacloprid moves through the skin's natural lipid layer, reaching and killing adult fleas before they ever get a chance to bite.
  • Prevents Flea Infestations: Re-infesting fleas are killed within 3 to 5 minutes of contact, stopping them from settling in and producing eggs on your dog.
  • Treats Sarcoptic Mange: Provides dependable control of sarcoptic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis, often contracted at dog parks, groomers, or boarding facilities.
  • Treats Roundworms: Works against adult Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina roundworm infections in small dogs with every monthly dose.
  • Treats Hookworms: Addresses Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala hookworm infections across multiple life stages.
  • Treats Whipworms: Completes intestinal parasite coverage by controlling Trichuris vulpis whipworm infections alongside all other targeted parasites.
  • Water-Resistant Formula: Heartworm protection stays effective 60 minutes after swimming and 90 minutes after a bath, keeping small active dogs fully covered.
  • Missed Dose Flexibility: A dose missed by a few days can be applied straight away, with the regular monthly schedule picking up from that point.
  • Early Puppy Use: This product can be given to puppies that have hit 7 weeks of age and a minimum body weight of 3 pounds.

How to Use

Directions for Use

  • Prescription Required: This FDA-licensed spot-on must be dispensed through or under the direct order of a licensed veterinarian.
  • Monthly Application: Empty the complete contents of one tube onto your dog's skin once a month, keeping to the same date each time where possible.
  • Minimum Dose: Every monthly application should deliver at least 4.5 mg/lb (10 mg/kg) imidacloprid and 1.1 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg) moxidectin.
  • Step 1 – Open the Tube: Take one applicator tube out of the pack. Hold it upright and pull off the cap.
  • Step 2 – Break the Seal: Flip the cap around, press it firmly back onto the tube tip, and twist it to break the seal open. Remove the cap completely before applying.
  • Step 3 – Prepare the Application Site: Ask your dog to stand still. Gently part the fur along the back between the shoulder blades until the skin underneath is clearly visible.
  • Step 4 – Apply the Solution: Place the tip directly onto the exposed skin and squeeze the full contents out at one single spot between the shoulder blades. This applies to all dogs in the 9.1 to 20 lb range.
  • Avoid Irritated Skin: Never put this solution on skin that looks broken, raw, or inflamed in any way.
  • Sarcoptic Mange Dosing: One topical application is the standard starting point for mange; a second dose the following month can be considered if your vet advises it.
  • Missed Dose: A forgotten dose should be given at the earliest opportunity, then continue with the regular monthly schedule as normal.

Disclaimer: This dosage information is provided by the manufacturer. Always consult your veterinarian before administering or adjusting any medication for your pet.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • Heartworm Screening First: A heartworm check with your vet should be done before the first dose, as adult heartworm infections already present in the body are beyond what this product can treat.
  • Not for Adult Heartworms: This product has no action against adult heartworms; dogs confirmed as positive should go through adulticide treatment before this product is started.
  • Never Give by Mouth: Swallowing this product can bring on serious reactions including loss of coordination, muscle tremors, drooling, and dilated pupils; it is for skin use only.
  • Prevent Post-Application Licking: For a minimum of 30 minutes after applying, stop your dog from reaching the treated area and keep it away from other treated animals.
  • Keep Children Away: Children should not touch or go near the treated area on your dog's skin for two full hours after each application.
  • Dogs Only: This formulation is not suitable for cats; a different product made specifically for felines should be used instead.
  • Protect the Eyes: If this product reaches your dog's eyes, hold the eyelids open, rinse well with clean water, and get in touch with your vet right away.
  • Age and Weight Limits: This product has not been proven safe for dogs below 7 weeks of age or under 3 pounds in body weight; do not use below these thresholds.
  • Unwell or Weak Dogs: Extra care should be taken with dogs that are unwell, still recovering, or noticeably underweight; check with your vet before going ahead.
  • Breeding Females: Safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been confirmed; always seek veterinary advice before treating females that are pregnant or nursing.
  • Adulticide Timing: No safety data exists for using this product on the same day as heartworm adulticide therapy; your vet should set the right schedule.
  • Microfilariae Monitoring: In a small number of heartworm-positive dogs, microfilariae counts may hold steady or rise after treatment; ongoing vet follow-up is necessary.
  • Wash Hands Promptly: Wash both hands well with soap and water immediately after handling or applying this product.

Possible Side Effects

  • Skin Reactions at Site: Mild itching, slight skin thickening, or a small amount of residue at the treated area may appear but generally clears without any intervention.
  • Stomach Upset: Loose stools, vomiting, a drop in appetite, or blood in the stool have been reported in some dogs; inform your vet if any of these develop.
  • Low Energy: A temporary reduction in activity or longer sleep than usual has been reported in some small dogs following their monthly application.
  • Behavioural Changes: Some dogs may appear restless, over-groom, withdraw, or pace after treatment; contact your vet if this behaviour continues beyond a day.
  • Ingestion Reactions: If swallowed through licking, serious effects including muscle tremors, unsteady movement, and laboured breathing may develop; get emergency veterinary care without delay.
  • Skin Infection: Localised skin infection (pyoderma) at or around the treated spot was recorded in some dogs during field safety testing.
  • Allergic Reaction: Although rare, swelling around the face, hives, very pale gums, or sudden collapse all need urgent veterinary attention.
  • Excessive Drooling: A noticeable increase in saliva within the first hour after application has been recorded; let your vet know if it does not settle quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What parasites does Advantage Multi (Teal) protect small dogs against?

Ans: Advantage Multi (Teal) covers six parasites in one monthly application: heartworm larvae, circulating microfilariae in infected dogs, adult fleas, flea infestations, sarcoptic mange mites, and intestinal worms including roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Tick prevention is not part of its coverage.

Q2: How does the Teal Box (9.1–20 lbs) differ from the Green Box (3–9 lbs)?

Ans: The Teal Box holds 100 mg imidacloprid and 25 mg moxidectin in a 1 mL tube, while the Green Box carries 40 mg imidacloprid and 10 mg moxidectin in a 0.4 mL tube. Both offer the same six-way protection. Always select the tube that matches your dog's current weight.

Q3: How does Advantage Multi (Teal) stand apart from oral heartworm preventives?

Ans: This spot-on absorbs through the skin and keeps working all month without a tablet. It also brings together flea control, mange treatment, and intestinal worm coverage in one application, and is among the few products that can reduce circulating microfilariae in dogs already carrying a heartworm infection.

Q4: What should I do if my small dog licks the application site?

Ans: Swallowing this product can lead to muscle tremors, unsteady movement, dilated pupils, and heavy drooling. Head to your vet or an emergency clinic right away if licking occurs. After applying, keep your dog away from the treated spot and separate it from other pets for at least 30 minutes.

Q5: Can Advantage Multi (Teal) be used if my dog already has heartworms?

Ans: This product cannot remove adult heartworms from the body. Dogs confirmed with heartworm disease should complete adulticide treatment first. It is, however, indicated to bring down circulating microfilariae counts in infected dogs. Let your vet decide the safest timing for both treatments.
