Additional Information
Precautions
- Minimum Age and Weight: Do not use in cats under 9 weeks of age or weighing less than 2 lbs.
- Ferret Tube Size Critical: Only the 0.4 mL Orange Box is safe for ferrets; the smaller tube underdoses and the larger tube risks overdose.
- Ferret Weight Limitation: The effectiveness of Barrier in ferrets weighing over 4.4 lbs has not been established; consult your veterinarian accordingly.
- Sick or Debilitated Animals: Never apply Barrier to sick, debilitated, or underweight cats or ferrets regardless of their age or body weight.
- Breeding, Pregnant, Lactating Animals: Do not use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats or ferrets without first speaking to a veterinarian, as safety hasn't been established.
- Geriatric Cats: Use with caution in older cats with undiagnosed conditions; prolonged lethargy has been reported in some thin geriatric cats.
- Licking Prevention Critical: Accidental ingestion or licking of the product may cause hypersalivation, tremors, vomiting, and decreased appetite in cats and ferrets.
- Bathing Efficacy Not Evaluated: Effectiveness against heartworm after bathing has not been evaluated; avoid bathing close to application time.
- Eye Irritant for Humans: Keep it away from your eyes, and wash your hands carefully with soap and warm water after every use.
Possible Side Effects
- Hypersalivation: Excessive drooling can occur if the cat or ferret grooms the treated area; correct placement at the head base reduces risk.
- Vomiting and Decreased Appetite: Vomiting and reduced appetite have been reported when the product is accidentally ingested through self-grooming by cats.
- Tremors: Neurological tremors have been reported following accidental ingestion of the product; contact your veterinarian immediately if this occurs.
- Ferret Site Reactions: Pruritus, scabbing, redness, wounds, and inflammation at the treatment site have been reported in ferrets but resolved without therapy.
- Stiff or Matted Hair: Stiff, oily hair at the application site may appear temporarily; this is cosmetic and does not affect product safety.
- Human Adverse Reactions: Human exposure may cause headache, dizziness, and skin redness, burning, or tingling; seek medical attention if these symptoms occur.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What does Barrier Topical Solution (Orange Box) treat in cats and ferrets?
Ans: For cats weighing 5.1 to 9 lbs, Barrier Orange Box prevents heartworm, kills adult fleas, treats ear mites, and controls roundworm and hookworm infections monthly. For ferrets weighing at least 2 lbs, it prevents heartworm disease and treats adult flea infestations with one monthly application.
Q2: Why is the Orange Box the only Barrier size approved for ferrets?
Ans: Only the 0.4 mL Orange Box provides the correct dose for ferrets. The 0.23 mL tube delivers too little to be effective, while the 0.8 mL tube contains more than double the appropriate ferret dose, posing a serious overdose risk.
Q3: Does the cat and ferret spot-on treat ear mites and worms in ferrets?
Ans: No. For ferrets, Barrier is only approved for heartworm prevention and adult flea treatment. Ear mite, roundworm, and hookworm indications apply to cats only. If your ferret needs treatment for ear mites or intestinal parasites, consult your veterinarian for a ferret-specific option.
Q4: How does the Orange Box differ from the Purple Box for cats?
Ans: The Orange Box contains 0.4 mL delivering 40 mg imidacloprid and 4 mg moxidectin, suited for cats weighing 5.1 to 9 lbs. The Purple Box contains 0.8 mL delivering double the dose for cats weighing 9.1 to 18 lbs. Both provide identical five-in-one parasite protection.
Q5: Is the monthly ferret and cat spot-on safe for pregnant or breeding animals?
Ans: Safety for Barrier has not been confirmed in pregnant, lactating, or breeding cats or ferrets. If your pet is pregnant, nursing, or part of a breeding program, always speak with your veterinarian before starting parasite prevention to ensure the best option is selected.
