Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What does Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV protect against?

Ans: Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV helps reduce respiratory disease caused by equine herpesvirus types 1 and 4 and equine influenza virus A2 North American and A2 Eurasian strains. It’s designed for routine flu/rhino vaccination in susceptible horses.

Q2: Which horses can receive Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV?

Ans: The label indicates Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV for healthy horses 6 months of age or older, including pregnant mares. It is commonly used for foals starting at 6 months and adult horses in training, travel, or herd settings.

Q3: Is Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV safe for pregnant mares?

Ans: Yes. Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV is labeled for use in pregnant mares and may be administered during any stage of gestation. As with all vaccines, your veterinarian should assess overall health and timing for each mare.

Q4: What is the recommended dose for Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV?

Ans: Each dose is 2 mL per horse. The primary series consists of three 2 mL doses, spaced 3-4 weeks apart, with the first two administered intramuscularly and the third administered either intramuscularly or intranasally.

Q5: How often should Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV be repeated?

Ans: The label notes that the annual booster need has not been established. Many programs recommend revaccination annually or before exposure to high-risk situations (such as attending shows or traveling), but your veterinarian should determine the exact schedule.

Q6: Why does Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV include updated flu strains?

Ans: Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV was updated to follow OIE recommendations, incorporating Florida sublineage clade 1 along with established KY/95 and NM/2/93 strains. This supports relevant protection against circulating influenza variants.

Q7: Can the third Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV dose be given intranasally?

Ans: Yes. After two intramuscular doses, the third 2 mL dose may be administered either intramuscularly or intranasally. This flexibility can be helpful in horses that benefit from mucosal respiratory immunity.

Q8: What precautions should be followed with Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV?

Ans: Store refrigerated at 35°-46°F. Do not freeze. Do not mix with other products. Use the vial once opened. Avoid vaccinating within 21 days of slaughter and be prepared to treat any rare anaphylactoid reactions that may occur.

Q9: Does Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV contain preservatives?

Ans: Yes. The product composition lists gentamicin and thimerosal as preservatives. These help maintain vaccine stability and sterility in multi-dose vials. If a horse has a known sensitivity, discuss alternatives with a veterinarian.

Q10: When will Calvenza-03 EIV/EHV start protecting my horse?

Ans: Protection builds through the primary series. Immune response improves after each dose, with full benefit expected after completing all three 2 mL vaccinations. Follow the 3-4 week spacing to maximize antibody development.
