FDA-Approved Prostaglandin Injection for Cattle Reproductive Management
Product Description
Lutalyse HighCon (Dinoprost Tromethamine) Injection 12.5 mg/mL is an FDA-approved prescription sterile solution made for cattle only. Each mL packs in 12.5 mg dinoprost with 16.5 mg benzyl alcohol keeping it preserved. A 2 mL (25 mg dinoprost) dose per animal is given IM or SC, but only cattle with a corpus luteum will respond to it.
Benefits
- Estrus Synchronization: Syncs estrus and ovulation timing in beef cows, beef heifers, and replacement dairy heifers that have a corpus luteum.
- Silent Estrus Treatment: Treats undetected estrus in lactating dairy cows where a corpus luteum has been confirmed before treatment.
- Pyometra Treatment: Treats chronic endometritis (pyometra) in cattle, with most animals showing recovery within 14 days of a single injection.
- Early Gestation Abortion: Used as an abortifacient in beef cows, beef heifers, and replacement dairy heifers in the first 100 days of pregnancy.
- FTAI Synchronization: Works alongside FACTREL (gonadorelin) to sync estrous cycles for fixed-time artificial insemination in dairy cows.
- CIDR Protocol Compatible: Used with EAZI-BREED CIDR insert to synchronize estrus in dairy cows, suckled beef cows, and replacement heifers.
- No Withdrawal Period: No milk discard or preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for all labeled uses in cattle.
- IM and SC Routes: Can be given both intramuscularly and subcutaneously; SC bioavailability matches that of the approved IM LUTALYSE Injection.

How to Use
Dosage and Administration Instructions
- Prescription Required: Federal (USA) law restricts Lutalyse HighCon to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
- Standard Dose: Give 2 mL (25 mg dinoprost) by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection per animal for all labeled indications.
- Corpus Luteum Required: This product only works in cattle that have ovulated at least 5 days before treatment is given.
- Estrus Synchronization: Inject once or twice, 10 to 12 days apart; if a corpus luteum is present, estrus is expected 1 to 5 days after.
- Silent Estrus: Breed at 80 hours post-injection if estrus goes undetected; breed at the normal time if estrus shows up sooner.
- Abortion Indication: Give one 2 mL dose IM or SC within the first 100 days of pregnancy; abortion typically follows within 35 days.
- Never Administer IV: Never give this product intravenously as it can seriously worsen adverse reactions in cattle.

Additional Information
Precautions
- Cattle Only: Not approved for horses or swine; this product is cleared only for the labeled indications in cattle.
- Pregnant Cattle: Do not use in pregnant cattle unless abortion is the intended outcome and the animal is within 100 days of gestation.
- NSAID Interaction: NSAIDs block prostaglandin production and must never be given at the same time as Lutalyse HighCon.
- Progestin-Treated Cattle: Animals that have received a progestin may respond much less strongly to the luteolytic effects of this product.
- Excess Dose Risk: Going above the approved 25 mg dose can leave unacceptable drug residues behind in the animal's edible tissues.
- Women's Safety: Women of childbearing age should avoid handling; dinoprost absorbs through the skin and may trigger abortion or breathing problems.
- Asthmatics Safety: Anyone with asthma or other breathing conditions must take extreme care when handling or working near this product.
- Skin Spillage: Wash any skin contact off right away with soap and water to stop dinoprost from being absorbed into the body.
Possible Side Effects
- Salivation Signs: Some cattle have shown mild drooling after receiving a Lutalyse HighCon injection during the treatment period.
- Clostridial Infections: Severe clostridial infections at the injection site have been reported and have led to death in rare cases.
- Injection Site Swelling: Mild swelling and skin discoloration at the injection site were seen in some cattle during controlled safety studies.
- Temporary Heart Rate Rise: A brief, slight increase in heart rate was noted in cattle during target animal safety studies with dinoprost.
Storage Information
- Store Below 25°C: Keep below 25°C (77°F); brief exposure between 0°C and 40°C (32°F and 104°F) will not affect potency or quality.
- Keep Out of Reach: Store in a secure spot away from children, as this prescription product carries serious human safety risks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is Lutalyse HighCon injection used for in cattle?
Ans: Lutalyse HighCon is a prescription prostaglandin F2 alpha injection for cattle used to sync estrus, treat silent estrus and pyometra, induce early-gestation abortion, and support FACTREL-based and CIDR-based fixed-time artificial insemination protocols in beef and dairy herds.
Q2: What is the correct dose of Lutalyse HighCon dinoprost injection for cattle?
Ans: Every animal gets 2 mL (25 mg dinoprost) by IM or SC injection for all labeled uses. In FACTREL-based FTAI protocols, this same 2 mL dose is given 6 to 8 days after the first gonadorelin injection, as the treating veterinarian directs.
Q3: Is there a milk discard or withdrawal period for Lutalyse HighCon cattle injection?
Ans: No milk discard or preslaughter withdrawal period is needed for any labeled use of this product in cattle. Going above the approved 25 mg dose is a different matter, as exceeding that level can leave drug residues behind in edible tissues of treated animals.
Q4: Can Lutalyse HighCon prostaglandin injection be used in horses or swine?
Ans: No, this product is cleared for cattle use only and must never be given to horses or swine. For horses, the standard LUTALYSE Injection at 5 mg/mL is the correctly labeled formulation, and using the wrong product in these species is not permitted.
Q5: Why must women of childbearing age avoid handling Lutalyse HighCon injection?
Ans: Dinoprost tromethamine absorbs through the skin quickly and can trigger abortion or bronchospasms in humans. Women of childbearing age, people with asthma, and anyone with breathing problems must handle this product with extreme care and wash any skin contact off right away with soap and water.
