Additional Information
Precautions
- Apply at Base of Head Only: Apply at the base of the cat's head rather than between the shoulder blades to reduce the chance of the cat grooming and ingesting the solution.
- Prevent Licking After Application: Do not allow the cat to lick the application site for at least 30 minutes; keep cats in multi-pet households separated until the area has fully dried.
- Never Use Dog Formula on Cats: The dog formulation contains much higher moxidectin concentrations that are dangerous and potentially fatal if applied to cats.
- Avoid Use on Unwell Cats: Do not apply to cats that are sick, significantly underweight, or in poor overall condition as the risk of adverse reactions increases.
- Do Not Apply to Broken Skin: Never apply to irritated, broken, or inflamed skin at or near the intended application site on the cat.
- Minimum Age and Weight: This product is for cats and kittens nine weeks of age and older that weigh at least two pounds at the time of application.
Possible Side Effects
- Hypersalivation: Excessive drooling is the most common side effect and usually happens when a cat grooms and ingests residual solution from the application site.
- Application Site Reactions: Temporary hair loss, itching, redness, or skin lesions at the application site can occasionally occur and generally resolve on their own.
- Depression and Lethargy: Some cats may show reduced activity or temporary low mood in the days following a monthly application of this product.
- Vomiting and Reduced Appetite: Stomach upset including vomiting and decreased interest in food has been reported occasionally in cats after application.
- Serious Neurological Signs: Ataxia, trembling, hiding, or hyperactivity are rare but serious signs that need immediate emergency veterinary attention without delay.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What parasites does Midamox purple box protect large cats against?
Ans: Midamox for cats 9.1–18 lbs covers heartworm disease, adult fleas and flea infestations, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms in a single monthly application. Your veterinarian will help identify which parasites pose the biggest risk based on your cat's lifestyle and location.
Q2: Is Midamox for cats the same as Advantage Multi for Cats?
Ans: Midamox is FDA-confirmed to be bioequivalent to Advantage Multi for Cats, meaning it carries the same active ingredients at identical concentrations and delivers equivalent protection. Many cat owners make the switch simply because Midamox tends to come at a friendlier price without compromising on parasite coverage.
Q3: Can the dog formula of Midamox be used on cats in an emergency?
Ans: No, never. The dog formulation of Midamox contains moxidectin at concentrations that are significantly higher than what cats can safely handle. Applying a dog formula to a cat can cause serious toxicity and can be fatal. Always use the cat-specific formulation and confirm the correct weight range with your vet.
Q4: What are the most common side effects of Midamox in large cats?
Ans: Excessive drooling is the most frequently reported side effect and usually happens when a cat licks the application site. Temporary hair loss, redness, lethargy, vomiting, and reduced appetite can also occur. Serious signs like trembling or loss of coordination are rare but need immediate veterinary attention.
Q5: Is Midamox safe for kittens and smaller cats within the 9.1–18 lb range?
Ans: Midamox is approved for use in cats and kittens nine weeks of age and older that weigh at least two pounds. The purple box is specifically sized for cats between 9.1 and 18 pounds. Your veterinarian will confirm whether this weight range and formulation is the right fit for your cat before prescribing.
