Additional Information
Precautions
- Minimum Age and Weight: Only use on dogs and puppies that are at least seven weeks old and weigh a minimum of three pounds at the time of application.
- Apply Between Shoulder Blades: For dogs in this weight range, the full contents of the applicator go onto a single spot between the shoulder blades on the back.
- Prevent Licking After Application: Stop the treated dog from licking the application site on themselves or any other treated animal for at least 30 minutes after applying.
- Never Apply to Cats: Moxidectin levels in this dog formulation far exceed what cats can safely handle and can prove fatal if applied to them.
- Caution in Unwell Dogs: Sick, debilitated, or underweight dogs carry a higher risk of adverse reactions and should only receive this product under direct veterinary guidance.
- Avoid in Breeding or Pregnant Dogs: Safety has not been confirmed in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs; only use in these animals if a vet has specifically approved it.
- MDR1-Affected Breeds: Collies and other breeds with the MDR1 gene mutation may have heightened sensitivity to moxidectin; speak to your vet before use in these breeds.
Possible Side Effects
- Diarrhea and Bloody Stools: Gut-related effects including loose stools or bloody stools have been reported, and may be more likely in dogs carrying a heavy parasite burden at the time of treatment.
- Lethargy and Reduced Appetite: Some small dogs show lower energy levels and less interest in food following their monthly application of this product.
- Respiratory and Eye Discharge: Coughing, nasal discharge, and eye discharge have been noted particularly in heartworm-positive dogs receiving microfilariae treatment.
- Hair Changes at Application Site: The fur at the treated spot may look stiff or oily for a short while after application, but this clears up on its own within about 48 hours.
- Serious Neurological Signs: Tremors, loss of coordination, or seizures are uncommon but require emergency veterinary attention the moment they are noticed.
Storage Information
- Room Temperature Storage: Tuck applicators away from heat and direct light in a consistently cool spot to keep them in good condition until use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What parasites does the green-box Midamox cover in small dogs?
Ans: Midamox for dogs 3–9 lbs addresses heartworm disease, adult fleas and flea infestations, sarcoptic mange, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms all in one monthly application. Your vet will help work out which of these parasites are most relevant based on your dog's lifestyle, environment, and geographic location.
Q2: Why is heartworm prevention especially important for small and toy breed dogs?
Ans: Small dogs have less physical capacity in their heart and blood vessels, meaning even a modest worm burden can create serious problems faster than it would in a larger dog. Starting monthly prevention from seven weeks of age is the most reliable way to keep toy and small breeds safe from a disease that is far easier to prevent than it is to manage once established.
Q3: Can Midamox green-box be used alongside other medications my small dog is taking?
Ans: Field safety studies showed this product used safely alongside a broad range of common medications including anticonvulsants, corticosteroids, NSAIDs, antihistamines, and thyroid hormones. That said, always give your vet a full picture of everything your dog is currently taking before starting Midamox, as individual situations can vary.
Q4: Should a small dog be tested for heartworm before starting Midamox?
Ans: Yes, a heartworm test before starting any monthly preventive is strongly recommended. Beginning Midamox in a dog that already carries an adult heartworm infection will not clear those worms and can trigger adverse reactions as microfilariae are eliminated. Your vet will map out the right course of action if a positive result comes back.
Q5: Is Midamox green-box the same as Advantage Multi for Dogs in small breed size?
Ans: Midamox is FDA-confirmed bioequivalent to Advantage Multi for Dogs, built on the same active ingredients at matching concentrations. Small breed owners who switch can count on the same broad monthly parasite coverage, often at a noticeably lower cost per dose than the branded alternative.
