Monthly Topical Spot-On for Fleas, Heartworm, and Internal Parasites in Large Dogs

Product Description

Midamox (Imidacloprid + Moxidectin) Topical Solution for Dogs 55.1–88 lbs is an FDA-approved prescription monthly spot-on treatment bioequivalent to Advantage Multi. Each blue-box applicator contains imidacloprid 10% and moxidectin 2.5%, formulated to deliver a minimum of 10mg/kg imidacloprid and 2.5mg/kg moxidectin based on body weight. Imidacloprid takes out adult fleas and cuts into the flea life cycle, while moxidectin blocks heartworm disease, clears circulating microfilariae, and tackles intestinal hookworms and roundworms. Applied monthly between the shoulder blades, the water-resistant formula holds up after bathing or swimming.

Benefits

  • FDA-Approved Heartworm Prevention: The only FDA-approved generic combination shown to clear circulating heartworm microfilariae in dogs that have already tested positive.
  • Flea Kill and Life Cycle Control: Takes out adult fleas and disrupts flea development in the environment, cutting down active infestations and keeping them from coming back.
  • Sarcoptic Mange Treatment: Goes after sarcoptic mange from Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis, a contagious and uncomfortable skin condition that dogs can pick up easily.
  • Intestinal Worm Control: Clears hookworm and roundworm infections in dogs as part of a broad monthly parasite management routine.
  • Water-Resistant Monthly Protection: Holds its effectiveness after bathing or swimming when applied monthly, keeping broad-spectrum parasite coverage going consistently.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • For Dogs Only: The moxidectin level in this dog formulation is far above what cats can handle safely, and applying it to a cat can be fatal.
  • Do Not Apply Orally: This product is for external topical use only and should never be swallowed or put near the mouth.
  • Prevent Licking After Application: Treated dogs should be kept away from other pets for 30 minutes after application and watched to make sure they do not lick the treated spot.
  • Do Not Bathe Within 24 Hours: Bathing, shampooing, or swimming should be avoided for at least 24 hours after application to give the solution time to fully absorb.
  • Caution in MDR1-Affected Breeds: Collies and other MDR1-affected breeds may be more sensitive to moxidectin and need careful management on this product.
  • Not for Puppies Under 7 Weeks: Puppies younger than seven weeks or weighing under three pounds should not receive this product.
  • Human Skin and Eye Hazard: Skin contact during application should be avoided, hands should be washed thoroughly afterward, and eyes should be flushed with water right away if any accidental contact happens.

Possible Side Effects

  • Application Site Reactions: The treated area may look damp or feel greasy for a day or two, with some white residue or light redness that usually settles within 48 hours.
  • Digestive Upset: Dogs with a heavier worm burden going into treatment are most likely to experience loose or bloody stools, vomiting, or a reduced interest in food.
  • Lethargy and Coughing: Low energy, coughing, and nasal or eye discharge can come up, most often in heartworm-positive dogs being cleared of microfilariae.
  • Serious Neurological Signs: Tremors, loss of coordination, or seizures are rare but serious and need immediate emergency veterinary care along with stopping the product.

Storage Information

  • Store Below 77°F: Keep applicators at or below 77°F, with brief periods up to 104°F acceptable.
  • Keep in Original Packaging: Each applicator should stay sealed in its blister pack until use to protect it from heat, light, and moisture.
  • Out of Reach: Keep this product somewhere children and untreated animals in the home cannot get to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What parasites does Midamox 55.1–88 lbs protect large dogs against?

Ans: Fleas, circulating heartworm microfilariae, sarcoptic mange, hookworms, and roundworms all fall within Midamox's coverage for large dogs. Prevention of heartworm disease from Dirofilaria immitis is also part of what it is indicated for. A veterinarian will work out the full parasite prevention plan based on the dog's location and lifestyle exposure.

Q2: Is Midamox bioequivalent to Advantage Multi for dogs?

Ans: The FDA and Norbrook have both confirmed that Midamox matches Advantage Multi in active ingredients, concentrations, and blood level delivery, which is what bioequivalence means in practice. That puts it on equal clinical footing with the branded product while coming in at a lower price point for dog owners.

Q3: Can Midamox be used in heartworm-positive dogs?

Ans: Midamox is among the very few FDA-approved options that can clear circulating microfilariae in a dog that has already tested positive for heartworm. Veterinary supervision during that process is essential, as microfilariae dying off can trigger significant reactions in some dogs. A veterinarian should always know the dog's heartworm status before Midamox is started.

Q4: Why must Midamox never be used on cats?

Ans: Dog-strength moxidectin sits well above the threshold cats can process safely, and their limited ability to break down macrocyclic lactone compounds means that applying this product to a cat can cause severe neurological toxicity, seizures, and death. Only species-specific formulations should ever be used, and a dog product should never go anywhere near a cat.

Q5: What should I do if my dog licks the Midamox application site?

Ans: Licking the application site can bring on salivation and neurological signs from the moxidectin, so rinsing the mouth out with water and calling a veterinarian right away is the right response. Keeping treated pets apart for at least 30 minutes after application and watching until the spot has dried are the best ways to stop this from happening.
