Monthly Topical Heartworm and Flea Protection for Small Dogs

Product Description

Midamox (Imidacloprid + Moxidectin) Topical Solution for Dogs 9.1–20 lbs is an FDA-approved prescription monthly spot-on treatment bioequivalent to Advantage Multi, designed for small dogs. Each teal-box applicator delivers imidacloprid 10% and moxidectin 2.5%, providing the minimum required doses of 10mg/kg imidacloprid and 2.5mg/kg moxidectin. Imidacloprid gets into flea nervous system function and takes them out fast while breaking the environmental flea cycle, and moxidectin handles heartworm prevention, microfilariae clearance, and intestinal hookworm and roundworm control. The water-resistant formula keeps working after bathing or outdoor exposure when applied monthly between the shoulder blades.

Benefits

  • Small Dog Heartworm Prevention: Gives small dogs precise monthly heartworm protection through an applicator matched exactly to their weight range.
  • Rapid Flea Elimination: Takes adult fleas out quickly and disrupts egg and larval development to bring flea infestations in the home under control.
  • Intestinal Worm Treatment: Tackles hookworm and roundworm infections that are common in small dogs, rounding out internal parasite coverage alongside external protection.
  • Sarcoptic Mange Treatment: Clears sarcoptic mange in small dogs and brings relief from the intense scratching and skin damage that comes with this contagious mite infestation.
  • Advantage Multi Bioequivalent: FDA-confirmed bioequivalent to Advantage Multi, matching its proven protection for small dogs at a more affordable price.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • For Dogs Only: The moxidectin level in this dog formulation is far above what cats can handle safely, and applying it to a cat can cause fatal neurological toxicity.
  • External Use Only: This solution is for topical use on skin only and should never go near the mouth, eyes, or any mucous membrane.
  • Prevent Licking After Application: Treated dogs should be kept away from other household pets for 30 minutes and watched until the application spot has fully dried.
  • No Bathing for 24 Hours: Bathing, shampooing, or swimming should be avoided for at least 24 hours after applying to allow the skin to fully absorb the solution.
  • Caution in MDR1 Breeds: Miniature Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, and other small breeds that may carry the MDR1 mutation can have greater moxidectin sensitivity and need veterinary guidance.
  • Not for Puppies Under 7 Weeks: Puppies younger than seven weeks should not receive this product regardless of weight.
  • Wash Hands After Application: Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and water after applying to avoid skin and eye irritation from the solution.

Possible Side Effects

  • Application Site Reactions: The treated area may look greasy or stiff, show white residue deposits, or have mild redness, with most of this settling within 48 hours on its own.
  • Vomiting and Digestive Upset: Small dogs carrying an active parasite load going into treatment are most likely to experience vomiting, loose or bloody stools, and appetite loss.
  • Lethargy and Respiratory Signs: Low energy, coughing, and nasal or eye discharge can come up, most often in heartworm-positive small dogs during microfilariae treatment.
  • Serious Neurological Reactions: Tremors, loss of coordination, or seizures are rare but serious and need immediate emergency veterinary care without delay.

Storage Information

  • Store Below 77°F: Keep applicators at or below 77°F, with brief periods up to 104°F acceptable.
  • Keep in Original Blister Pack: Each applicator should stay sealed in its blister pack until monthly use to protect it against heat, moisture, and light.
  • Out of Reach: Keep this product somewhere children and untreated animals in the home cannot get to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What popular small dog breeds commonly use the Midamox teal box?

Ans: Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Miniature Schnauzers, Pugs, Pomeranians, Maltese, and small Terrier breeds are among those that typically sit in the 9.1 to 20 pound range this teal box is built for. Weighing the dog before each purchase is worth doing since puppies nearing the upper limit of this range may need to move to the red box.

Q2: Is a heartworm test required before starting Midamox in small dogs?

Ans: Testing before starting matters because putting a heartworm-positive dog on a preventive without treating the infection first can set off adverse reactions when microfilariae begin to die off. A veterinarian will walk through the right treatment path if a small dog tests positive before Midamox is introduced.

Q3: Can Midamox replace a separate intestinal worming treatment for small dogs?

Ans: Monthly Midamox application handles hookworms and roundworms, which may take separate deworming products for those specific parasites off the table. Tapeworms and whipworms are not in its coverage, though, so a veterinarian will determine whether it covers enough ground based on the dog's lifestyle, location, and fecal test results.

Q4: What happens if a small dog in the same household licks the application site of another treated dog?

Ans: A dog that licks a freshly treated spot on another dog can pick up enough moxidectin to cause salivation and neurological signs, so rinsing the mouth with water and calling a veterinarian straight away is the right response. Keeping treated dogs separated for at least 30 minutes and watching until the spot dries stops this from happening.

Q5: How does Midamox control flea infestations in the environment beyond killing adult fleas on the dog?

Ans: Imidacloprid in Midamox does not just take out adult fleas on the dog, it also gets into the flea eggs and larvae that drop off into the home, knocking out the life cycle at more than one stage. The flea population in the home drops progressively with consistent monthly use, though full environmental control can take several months since flea pupae in carpets and bedding are tough to reach.
