Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What does Prestige 5 Equine Vaccine protect against?

Ans: Prestige 5 Equine Vaccine helps protect healthy horses 6 months and older against Eastern and Western encephalomyelitis (EEE/WEE), equine influenza (EIV), equine herpesvirus types 1 and 4 (EHV-1/EHV-4), and tetanus as part of a vaccination program.

Q2: What does “rhino” mean in horse vaccines?

Ans: “Rhino” is common shorthand for equine rhinopneumonitis, which is a respiratory disease linked to equine herpesvirus. For Prestige 5, rhino protection refers to the EHV-1 and EHV-4 components included in the vaccine.

Q3: What is the Prestige 5 Equine Vaccine dosing schedule?

Ans: The primary series is two intramuscular injections of 1 mL given 3–4 weeks apart. Historically, annual revaccination has been recommended; however, the timing of ongoing boosters should be determined by a veterinarian based on exposure risk and management needs.

Q4: How soon does Prestige 5 start working?

Ans: Protective immunity develops after the initial vaccination series is completed. Most horses build stronger protection after the second 1 mL injection given 3–4 weeks after the first dose, following label directions and veterinary guidance.

Q5: Does Prestige 5 help reduce virus shedding?

Ans: Yes. Prestige 5 has been shown to decrease the shedding of equine influenza virus (EIV) and equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) in horses. Reduced shedding may help lower transmission pressure in barns, shows, and other group-housing environments.

Q6: How long does Prestige 5 protection last?

Ans: Duration of immunity has been demonstrated at 6 months for equine influenza (EIV). The duration of immunity for the other components, including EEE/WEE, EHV-1/EHV-4, and tetanus, has not been established; therefore, scheduling should follow veterinary advice.

Q7: Are there side effects or reactions after vaccination?

Ans: Local reactions at injection sites may occur and commonly resolve within 3–7 days. Systemic reactions may also occur. Allergic reactions are possible; label guidance indicates epinephrine may be used if an allergic reaction occurs.

Q8: How should Prestige 5 Equine Vaccine be stored and handled?

Ans: Prestige 5 should be stored refrigerated at 2°–8°C and shaken well before use. Use the entire contents when first opened, do not mix with other products, and administer only by deep intramuscular injection.

Q9: Can pregnant mares receive Prestige 5 Equine Vaccine?

Ans: The label information notes Prestige 5 has not been tested in pregnant animals. A veterinarian should evaluate risk-benefit and timing for pregnant mares, especially when coordinating broader vaccination schedules for breeding farms and high-exposure facilities.
