Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is this dog food suitable for puppies?
Ans: No, Purina Pro Plan Adult Large Breed Chicken & Rice Formula is formulated specifically for adult dogs over 50 pounds. It is not suitable for puppies, which have different nutritional requirements and should be fed a large breed puppy formula.
Q2: How much should I feed my large breed dog?
Ans: Using a standard 8 oz measuring cup, dogs weighing 51 to 75 lbs should receive approximately 3 to 3-2/3 cups daily, whereas dogs weighing 76 to 100 lbs need about 3-2/3 to 4-1/2 cups. Adjust quantities over time based on activity level and body condition.
Q3: What are the main ingredients in this dog food?
Ans: The top ingredients are chicken, rice, corn protein meal, whole grain wheat, and poultry by-product meal, followed by whole grain corn and barley. The recipe also includes fish oil and glucosamine hydrochloride to help support joint and skin health in large breed dogs.
Q4: Does this formula support joint health in large breed dogs?
Ans: Yes, this formula provides guaranteed amounts of glucosamine and EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid, both of which promote joint health and mobility. These nutrients are particularly vital for large-breed dogs, whose larger frames exert greater stress on their joints.
Q5: How should I transition my dog to this new food?
Ans: Purina suggests a 7 to 10-day transition period for switching your dog to this new food. Gradually decrease the amount of the old food each day while increasing the new formula until your dog is only eating it, which helps prevent digestive issues.
Q6: What sizes does this large breed dog food come in?
Ans: This formula is available in four bag sizes to fit different households: 18 lb, 34 lb, 37.5 lb, and 47 lb. Choosing a larger bag can be a convenient, cost-effective option for large dogs or multi-dog homes.
Q7: Does this formula contain probiotics?
Ans: No. Unlike several other Pro Plan formulas, this large-breed recipe doesn't list guaranteed probiotics on its label. Instead, it emphasizes glucosamine and EPA for joint health, combined with an ideal protein-to-fat ratio to support large breed dogs in maintaining a healthy weight.
Q8: How many calories does this dog food provide?
Ans: This formula offers roughly 3,823 kcal per kilogram, or approximately 407 kcal per cup. Calorie requirements differ among dogs, so feeding amounts should be tailored according to factors like age, activity level, and environment to support a healthy body weight.
