Lamb and Whitefish with Oats, Barley, Millet, and Goat Milk for Puppies

Product Description

Zignature Select Cuts Puppy Formula is a grain-inclusive dry kibble made with lamb and whitefish as the first two ingredients, paired with super grains: oats, barley, and millet, and goat milk for digestive and immune support. DHA from whitefish supports brain and eye development, while omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids promote skin and coat health from the first meal. Free from chicken, legumes, potatoes, corn, wheat, soy, byproducts, and artificial additives. Formulated for growth, including large breed puppies.

Benefits

  • Lamb and Whitefish as First Ingredients: Both are identified animal proteins at the top of the ingredient list, giving puppies a bioavailable, dual-protein base that supports muscle development from the start.
  • DHA for Brain and Eye Development: EPA and DHA at 0.16% minimum come naturally from whitefish, supporting healthy cognitive function and visual development during the critical early growth stages.
  • Goat Milk for Gut Health: Goat milk is included specifically to support digestive health, immune function, and a healthy gut microbiome during early life when the digestive system is still developing.
  • Super Grains for Steady Energy: Oats, barley, and millet provide slow-burning, low-glycemic carbohydrates that give puppies consistent energy without the blood sugar spikes of refined-grain fillers.
  • No Legumes or Potatoes: This recipe is free from chickpeas, peas, lentils, and potatoes, ingredients that have been associated with DCM concerns in grain-free diets, making it a grain-inclusive alternative for owners who want to avoid them.

Disclaimer: Product information and usage guidelines are provided by the manufacturer. Always use products as directed on the label and consult your veterinarian before use if you have any concerns regarding your pet’s health.

Directions for Use

  • Use the age and weight chart: Puppies aged 0 to 6 months need more food per pound of body weight than older puppies.
  • Feed at room temperature: Serve the kibble at room temperature rather than cold from storage; this improves palatability and digestion for puppies still developing their digestive systems.
  • Don't switch cold turkey: Mix in a little of this alongside your puppy's current food, then shift the ratio over 5 to 7 days until fully transitioned to avoid digestive upset.
  • Keep fresh water available: Fresh, clean water should be out at all times alongside every meal, not just when you remember to refill the bowl.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • For puppies only: This recipe is specifically formulated for growth. Once your dog reaches adulthood, switch to an adult formula to match their changed nutritional requirements.
  • This recipe contains goat milk: Goat milk is included for digestive support. If your puppy has a known dairy sensitivity, monitor closely during the first few days of feeding and consult your veterinarian if any reaction occurs.
  • Consult your vet for specific health conditions: If your puppy has a diagnosed condition, documented allergies, or a specific dietary requirement, confirm the switch with your veterinarian before making the change.

Storage Information

  • Seal the bag after each use: Roll or clip it shut after every feeding. Leaving it open lets air and moisture in and the kibble goes stale faster than you'd expect.
  • Cool and dry storage: Keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sun. A warm, humid spot will turn the fat in the kibble rancid faster and shorten how long it stays fresh.
  • Do not refrigerate: Kibble doesn't need refrigeration and putting it in the fridge actually makes things worse, the temperature change causes condensation inside the bag, which leads to mold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why does this recipe use supergrains instead of legumes?

Ans: Many grain-free dog foods use chickpeas, peas, and lentils as their primary carbohydrate and binding ingredients. These legumes have been associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) concerns in the FDA investigation into grain-free diets. The Select Cuts line replaces legumes with oats, barley, and millet, nutrient-rich grains that provide energy and fiber.

Q2: Is this food suitable for large breed puppies?

Ans: Yes. The AAFCO statement confirms this recipe is formulated for growth, including large-sized dogs (70 lbs or more as adults). A single recipe covers all puppy sizes. Use the age and weight feeding chart to determine the correct daily amount for your specific puppy, and adjust as they grow.

Q3: Why is goat milk included in this recipe?

Ans: Goat milk is included to support digestive health and immune function during early life, when a puppy's gut microbiome is still developing. It is naturally easier to digest than cow's milk due to smaller fat globules and a different protein structure, making it a practical ingredient for a puppy formula where gut development is a key nutritional focus.

Q4: What is DHA and why does it matter for puppies?

Ans: DHA is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid that is vital for brain and eye health in young dogs. This recipe provides EPA and DHA at 0.16% minimum from whitefish, which is the most bioavailable dietary source of these fatty acids.

Q5: Does this recipe contain chicken?

Ans: The recipe contains turkey fat, turkey meal, and pork meal further down the ingredient list, but no chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, or chicken by-products of any kind. The primary proteins are lamb and whitefish. Dogs with documented chicken sensitivities can usually tolerate turkey and pork.

Q6: What makes oats, barley, and millet better than corn or brewer's rice?

Ans: Corn and brewer's rice are low-cost grain fillers that spike blood sugar quickly and offer limited nutritional value beyond calories. Oats bring soluble fiber and sustained energy. Barley adds both soluble and insoluble fiber alongside essential minerals. Millet is gluten-free, rich in magnesium and phosphorus, and provides steady low-glycemic energy. All three do more nutritionally than corn or brewer's rice while keeping the carbohydrate load manageable for a growing puppy.
