Dosage & Administration Instructions

  • Monthly Use: Give Trifexis once a month to keep your dog protected from fleas, heartworms, and intestinal worms without any gaps.
  • Give With Food: Always give the chew with a full meal. This helps the body absorb the ingredients properly so the medicine works as it should.
  • Watch After Giving: Keep an eye on your dog for about one hour after dosing. If your dog vomits during this time, give another full tablet with food.
  • If You Miss a Dose: If you forget a dose, administer it as soon as you recall, making sure to give it with food. After that, resume the usual once a month dosing routine.
  • For Heartworm Protection: Start giving Trifexis within one month of your dog’s first exposure to mosquitoes and continue monthly until mosquito season ends.
  • If You Have Multiple Dogs: Treat every dog in your home to prevent fleas from spreading again. If you have cats, use a separate flea treatment made specifically for them.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • Heartworm Testing: Test your dog for heartworm before starting Trifexis. Giving it to a dog that already has heartworm can lead to unwanted reactions.
  • Dogs with Epilepsy: Use carefully in dogs with a history of seizures. In rare cases, seizures have been reported.
  • Breeding Dogs: Safety has not been studied in breeding males. Breeding females should only use it under a veterinarian’s guidance.
  • Other Medications: Do not combine with high doses of ivermectin. Taking both at the same time can increase the risk of severe adverse reactions.
  • Young Puppies: Puppies under 14 weeks may vomit more often during the first few doses. This usually improves as they grow older.
  • Minimum Age and Weight: Only give to dogs that are at least 8 weeks old and weigh 5 pounds or more.
  • Mosquito Season: Giving fewer than three doses after mosquito season can lower heartworm protection. Continue monthly dosing as recommended.

Possible Side Effects

  • Vomiting: This is the most common side effect. It is usually mild and often goes away on its own without treatment.
  • Itching and Redness: Some dogs may have mild itching, skin redness, or slight irritation after taking the tablet.
  • Low Energy: A few dogs may seem tired or less active for a short time. This normally improves as their body adjusts.
  • Diarrhea: Mild stomach upset, such as loose stools, can happen in some dogs.
  • Reduced Appetite: Some dogs may eat less than usual for a short period. This usually returns to normal quickly.
  • Neurological Signs: In rare cases, dogs may show shaking, trouble with balance, or seizures, especially if they are already prone to these issues.
  • Excess Drooling: Temporary drooling may occur but typically stops without any treatment.

Storage Information

  • Temperature Range: Store between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Brief exposure to temperatures ranging from 59°F to 86°F or 15°C to 30°C is acceptable.
  • Keep Dry: Maintain tablets in a dry environment and protect from moisture to preserve potency and flavor integrity.
  • Original Packaging: Keep tablets in their original blister packs until use to prevent contamination and maintain identification.
  • Child Safety: Keep this product in a secure place that children and pets cannot access to avoid accidental swallowing or improper use.
  • Shelf Stability: Proper storage ensures Trifexis maintains its full efficacy throughout its labeled shelf life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How quickly does Trifexis start killing fleas?

Ans: Trifexis begins killing fleas within 30 minutes of administration and achieves 100% flea elimination within four hours. Continued monthly use prevents future infestations by killing fleas before they can lay eggs.

Q2: Can Trifexis prevent heartworm disease in dogs?

Ans: Trifexis helps protect dogs from heartworm disease by targeting and destroying immature heartworm larvae before they develop further in the body. Giving the tablet once a month maintains consistent protection, which is especially important during peak mosquito activity. Before beginning treatment, dogs should be tested to confirm they are heartworm negative.

Q3: What should I do if my dog vomits after taking Trifexis?

Ans: If your dog vomits within one hour of administration, redose with a full tablet to maintain effectiveness. Always give Trifexis with food to improve absorption and reduce the chance of stomach upset.

Q4: Is Trifexis safe for puppies and small dogs?

Ans: Trifexis is safe for dogs and puppies eight weeks or older, weighing at least five pounds. Puppies under 14 weeks may experience mild vomiting initially, which generally improves with age and continued dosing.

Q5: Can I give Trifexis with other medications?

Ans: Consult your veterinarian before combining Trifexis with other treatments. Adverse reactions have been reported when spinosad (a component) is used with high doses of ivermectin. Always disclose all medications your pet takes.
