Monthly Topical 5-in-1 Parasite Protection for Large Cats (9.1–18 lbs)
Product Description
Advantage Multi Topical Solution (Purple) for Cats is an FDA-licensed, prescription-only once-monthly spot-on for cats and kittens 9 weeks or older weighing 9.1 to 18 lbs. Each 0.8 mL single-dose tube combines imidacloprid (10%) and moxidectin (1%) for 5-in-1 broad-spectrum protection. One monthly application prevents heartworm disease, kills adult fleas, prevents flea infestations, treats ear mites, and clears roundworm and hookworm infections. The Purple Box must never be used in ferrets due to overdose risk.
Benefits
- Heartworm Disease Prevention: Moxidectin absorbs into the body after application, providing continuous heartworm disease protection for the full monthly period.
- Kills Adult Fleas on Contact: Imidacloprid moves through the coat's lipid layer and kills adult fleas on contact, so your cat does not have to be bitten for the product to work.
- Prevents and Treats Flea Infestations: Eliminates existing flea infestations and stops new ones from developing by killing fleas before egg-laying occurs.
- Treats and Controls Ear Mites: Clears Otodectes cynotis ear mite infestations, removing the need for separate ear drops or additional treatments.
- Treats and Controls Roundworms: Effective against adult and immature adult Toxocara cati roundworms, a common intestinal parasite found in cats.
- Treats and Controls Hookworms: Controls adult, immature adult, and fourth-stage larvae of Ancylostoma tubaeforme hookworm infections in cats.
- Forgives a Late Dose: A dose missed by a few days can simply be applied right away and the regular monthly schedule resumed without restarting.
- Safe for Kittens from 9 Weeks: Approved for kittens as young as 9 weeks old that weigh at least 2 lbs.

How to Use
Directions for Use
- Prescription Required: Advantage Multi for Cats is an FDA-licensed prescription product obtained through or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
- Monthly Topical Application: Apply the full contents of one tube to your cat's skin once every 30 days, year-round, for continuous protection.
- Minimum Dose: Each monthly application delivers a minimum of 4.5 mg/lb (10 mg/kg) imidacloprid and 0.45 mg/lb (1 mg/kg) moxidectin.
- Step 1, Open the Tube: Take one applicator tube out of the package and hold it upright, then remove the cap.
- Step 2, Break the Seal: Flip the cap over and press the opposite end onto the tube tip, then twist to break the seal and remove the cap fully.
- Step 3, Apply at the Base of the Head: Part the fur at the back of the neck at the base of the head until skin shows, press the tube tip directly onto the skin, and squeeze out the full contents in one spot.
- Critical Application Location: Always apply at the base of the head where your cat cannot lick; applying elsewhere raises the risk of ingestion during grooming.
- Do Not Apply to Irritated Skin: Never apply this product to skin that is broken, damaged, or already irritated.
- Purple Box Not for Ferrets: The 0.8 mL Purple Box must never be given to ferrets as it can cause a serious moxidectin overdose; only the Orange Box is approved for ferret use.
- For Cats Over 18 lbs: Your veterinarian will advise on which tube sizes to combine to reach the correct total dose for cats over 18 lbs.
- Missed Dose: A forgotten dose can be given the moment you realize; just carry on with the monthly schedule from there and never apply two doses close together.
Disclaimer: This dosage information is provided by the manufacturer. Always consult your veterinarian before administering or adjusting any medication for your pet.
Additional Information
Precautions
- Sick or Debilitated Cats: Do not use on sick, underweight, or debilitated cats; extra caution is needed in older or compromised cats where lethargy has been noted.
- Never Administer Orally: This product must never be swallowed; every cat studied that ingested a full dose developed hypersalivation, vomiting, and poor appetite for at least one day.
- Prevent Licking for 30 Minutes: Stop your cat from licking the treated area for at least 30 minutes; in multi-pet homes, separation for up to 24 hours may be needed.
- Keep Children Away: Children should not touch the treated area for at least 30 minutes after the product has been applied.
- Never Use the Dog Formulation on Cats: The dog version contains 2.5% moxidectin, more than double the cat formulation; using it on cats, even at similar weights, can cause serious toxicity.
- Purple Box Not for Ferrets: The 0.8 mL Purple Box risks moxidectin overdose in ferrets; only the 0.4 mL Orange Box is cleared for ferret use.
- Minimum Age and Weight: Not suitable for cats younger than 9 weeks or weighing under 2 lbs.
- Heartworm-Positive Cats: Adverse shock-like reactions have been reported in some heartworm-positive cats; testing before starting is advisable at your veterinarian's discretion.
- Multi-Pet Households: Cats grooming dogs recently treated with the dog formulation can ingest enough of the higher-concentration product to develop adverse reactions; keep treated pets apart for up to 24 hours.
- Human Safety: Human skin and eye irritation has been reported with this product; always clean your hands properly with soap and water once you are done applying.
Possible Side Effects
- Expected Cosmetic Effects: Stiff hair, a damp appearance, or a light powdery residue at the treated spot are normal cosmetic effects and do not need veterinary attention.
- Application Site Reactions: Persistent inflammation, significant itching, hair loss, skin redness, or progressive scabbing at the treated area should be assessed by a veterinarian.
- Hypersalivation: Excessive drooling is the most commonly reported post-approval reaction and usually results from licking the application site rather than true toxicity.
- Digestive Upset: Vomiting, reduced appetite, and diarrhea have been reported in some cats following treatment.
- Lethargy and Depression: Reduced energy and prolonged low mood have been reported, and can be more noticeable in older or underweight cats.
- Behavioral Changes: Hyperactivity, hiding, excessive grooming, agitation, and behavioral changes have been noted in some cats after treatment.
- Neurological Reactions: Trembling, loss of coordination, and tremors have been reported and may point to moxidectin-related effects that need immediate veterinary attention.
- Death (Rare): In rare cases death has been reported following use; a direct link to the product could not always be confirmed.

- Temperature Range: Room temperature storage works fine; just make sure the product does not go below 4°C (39°F) or above 25°C (77°F).

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What parasites does Advantage Multi (Purple) for large cats protect against?
Ans: Advantage Multi Purple delivers 5-in-1 protection. It kills adult fleas, prevents flea infestations, prevents heartworm disease, treats ear mites, and clears roundworm and hookworm infections. It does not cover ticks or whipworms, so additional products may be needed for those parasites.
Q2: How does the Purple Box differ from the Orange Box?
Ans: The Purple Box holds 80 mg of imidacloprid and 8 mg of moxidectin in a 0.8 mL tube for cats 9.1 to 18 lbs. The Orange Box contains 40 mg of imidacloprid and 4 mg of moxidectin in a 0.4 mL tube for smaller cats and is also approved for ferrets. The Purple Box must never be used in ferrets due to overdose risk.
Q3: My large cat groomed itself after application and is now salivating. What should I do?
Ans: Drooling after licking the treated area is the most commonly reported reaction and is usually caused by the bitter taste of imidacloprid rather than toxicity. Contact your veterinarian promptly if symptoms are severe or prolonged, or if tremors or loss of coordination appear, as these may point to moxidectin-related effects needing veterinary management.
Q4: Can the Purple Box be used on a ferret?
Ans: No. The 0.8 mL Purple Box must never be given to ferrets as it risks a serious moxidectin overdose. Only the Orange Box (0.4 mL) is approved for ferrets weighing at least 2 lbs. Always confirm the correct product size with your veterinarian before treating a ferret.
Q5: Is it safe to use the Purple Box in a home where dogs are also treated with Advantage Multi for Dogs?
Ans: Both can be used in the same home but precautions are essential. Cats that groom recently treated dogs can ingest enough of the higher-concentration dog product to develop adverse neurological reactions. Keeping all treated pets apart for up to 24 hours after application is strongly advisable until the product has fully dried.
