  • Set the Syringe: While holding the plunger, turn the knurled ring a quarter turn to the left to loosen it, slide it to the prescribed weight marking with the arrow aligned, then lock it with a quarter turn to the right.
  • Prepare the Horse: Ensure the horse's mouth contains no feed, then remove the cover from the tip of the syringe.
  • Administer the Paste: Insert the syringe tip into the horse's mouth at the space between the teeth and depress the plunger fully to deposit paste on the back of the tongue.
  • After Dosing: Immediately raise the horse's head for a few seconds after administration to ensure the paste is swallowed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What parasites does Vetrimec Paste treat in horses?

Ans: It treats large and small strongyles, pinworms, ascarids, hairworms, large-mouth stomach worms, bots, lungworms, intestinal threadworms, summer sores, and neck threadworm dermatitis. It also targets the arterial stages of Strongylus vulgaris and benzimidazole-resistant small strongyle strains.

Q2: How is the dose calculated and set on the syringe?

Ans: The dose is 91 mcg ivermectin per lb (200 mcg/kg) of current body weight. Turn the knurled ring a quarter turn left to loosen it, slide it to the weight marking, and lock it with a quarter turn right. Each marking treats 250 lbs; one syringe covers up to 1,250 lbs.

Q3: Why is it important not to underdose ivermectin paste?

Ans: Underdosing can result in ineffective parasite treatment and may encourage the development of resistance to ivermectin. Always base the dose on the horse's current, accurate body weight and deliver the full calculated amount as directed on the label.

Q4: Is this product safe for pregnant mares and stallions?

Ans: Yes. According to VetOne, Vetrimec Paste may be used in horses of all ages, including mares at any stage of pregnancy. Stallions may also be treated without adversely affecting their fertility when used as labeled.

Q5: When should foals first be treated with an ivermectin dewormer?

Ans: The manufacturer label recommends that foals be treated initially at 6 to 8 weeks of age, with routine treatment repeated as appropriate thereafter. All horses, including foals and yearlings, should be part of a regular parasite control program.

Q6: Can Vetrimec Paste be used in dogs or other animals?

Ans: No. The label explicitly states this product is for horses only. Use in other species may cause severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in dogs. The product must be stored securely and kept away from other animals.

Q7: What should I do if my horse shows a reaction after treatment?

Ans: Reactions such as swelling and itching can occur in horses with heavy neck threadworm infections, due to large numbers of dying microfilariae. Symptomatic treatment may be advisable. Contact your veterinarian promptly if any adverse reactions occur following administration.

Q8: How should Vetrimec Paste be stored?

Ans: Store at 68–77°F (20–25°C). Excursions between 59–86°F (15–30°C) are permitted. Dispose of the used syringe in an approved landfill or by incineration; do not allow it to contaminate water sources.

Q9: Does resistance develop to ivermectin in horses?

Ans: Yes. Parasite resistance can develop to any dewormer class, including ivermectin. The label recommends using fecal egg count reduction tests or other diagnostic tools to monitor treatment effectiveness and adjust the parasite management plan accordingly.
